This book was a gift from the author. Again, Adele has delivered another excellent story. I love her witty writing skill and the humor she has in the situations and in the dialogue between her characters. While this book was most enjoyable, I found her previous two more humorous.
Adele presents very likeable character in her books, and these characters were no exception. She keeps the action moving so the reader isn't bogged down with too much unnecessary dialogue. I look forward to her next book.
It started slowly, and it was easy to put it down. However, I liked it enough to keep picking it up until I finished it.
I thought the beginning was a little confusing and a little slow, but it gets better. It could use a little more editing. The historical details are questionable. I don't think heroines dressing as men is amusing, sexy, whatever. The villain, especially in the scene at the end, was silly. The way it referred to Dane's past "jobs," I was sure the references were to previous books in the series--so I was surprised to see this was the first.
With all of my quibbles, I am still giving it four stars because I liked the hero and heroine (Dane more than Sophie) and it was an entertaining read. I plan to read the others in the series and other books by the author.
What You Desire by Adele Clee is a heart-touching Regency romance and mystery that ends in a beautiful happily ever after. The book includes plenty of intrigue and danger along with romance and well-written love scenes to keep the reader eagerly turning the pages to the end. I definitely recommend this book!
When the heroine, Sophie Beaufort, realizes her older brother, James, and the one remaining priceless family heirloom are missing, she decides to set out to London alone to find him. She feels confident that she can handle searching for him on her own. But then depraved and deadly Comte de Dampierre comes to her home making debased threats, so she decides that she must have Sebastian's assistance.
The hero, Sebastian Ashcroft, fourth Marquess of Danesfield, wants nothing more than to return to his home and live peacefully after years of pain and hard work to make his estate thrive. Sebastian does not want to get involved in hunting down Sophie's brother and a priceless heirloom, especially if it means being responsible for her by his side. She is too much of a temptation. But when he learns of Comte de Dampierre's threats to Sophie, he knows he must keep her safe and assist her in finding her brother.
A great feel good read that keeps the pages moving from start to finish! A headstrong, yet smart heroine. A masculine, yet not domineering hero. Two strong characters truly made for each other. Just enough action and intrigue to keep things really interesting without taking too much time away from the love story. The mystery portion really adds to the story, it doesn't feel like it's just tossed in to make some sort of conflict for the H/h to overcome. The heroine's internal struggles are not drawn out throughout the entire book, making her seem like a silly female; it's just enough to give one last mini hurdle for the characters to come together over. Oh yes, and there's lots of steam and passion- there are some bedroom scenes, and while somewhat descriptive, they're not overly crass or drawn out at all. While their passion and growing relationship is the heart of the story, it's not just about the lovemaking. If you're looking for a really involved read, with lots of backstory and deep, historical details, then this may not be the best book for you. It's a light, fun, quick read, with an easy HEA. Can't wait to read the next one in the series!
As a headstrong girl, Sophie Beaufort had a crush on her brothers friend Dane. As an independent thinking woman, she now loathes him for what he's become. Sadly, now that her brother James is missing, she may be forced to deal with Dane, but only on her own terms.
Sebastian Ashcroft, the 4th Marquess of Danesfield (Dane to his friends), has spent the last six years setting aright the mess he inherited. The last thing he needed was having to deal with his best friends sister. In fact, annoying is the only term he has ever associated with Sophie. Although time has turned her into a real beauty, time has not made her less daring, impetuous or annoying.
I loved reading What You Desire by Adele Clee. This compelling story ticked off all my favorite plot elements; such as a believable plot, some danger, a twist or two, some angst, interesting sub-characters, passionate chemistry and a HEA. Ms. Clee's descriptive writing and dialog, along with her strong characters, kept me turning pages like a possessed reader. Not to mention that Sophie and Dane's chemistry and passion virtually zinged off the pages. FYI, for those who care, there was a bit of descriptive sexual content, which added to, rather than distracting from the story.
